The Inevitable Gain

This week wasn’t great on the scale.

But it wasn’t terrible either.

  • Jason: +1.0
  • Jenny: +0.2

As most of you know I’ve been expecting a gain for several weeks now and I haven’t seen it. This week was a tough week for me food-wise. I used all of my weekly points (plus a few extra) so I knew I hadn’t been the best. I also hadn’t done as well with my activity. I know that I need to get moving, but finding the energy to do so has been a stumbling block.

Even before weigh-in this week, I was feeling heavy and sluggish. I blame the swimming suit I bought. I knew that I had bought it on the small size, but when I put it on, all I could see were all of the lumps, bumps and rolls. It really hit my confidence hard. Losing nearly 50 lbs underneath clothing looks great, but without working out I still looked terrible in the more revealing swim suit.

Jason and I talked about it yesterday and I think I figured out that starting a workout at the beginning of a workweek just isn’t going to work with me. I intend to get up early, but don’t. I could have time after work but I’m exhausted and just want to relax. So, starting on the weekend might be best for me… I don’t have to get up early for it and I don’t have to wait until the end of a long day to do it.

Thank goodness for a long weekend.

Since we’re taking an extra day after Memorial Day for a family event, Jason and I will actually have four days off. I’ve decided that I’m going to do some kind of activity on each of those five (starting tonight!) days so that I can figure out what I need to be doing at my fitness level that I will also enjoy. Among the activities I’ll be doing are: Walk Away the Pounds DVD, Weight Watchers new Punch workout, Dance Dance Revolution (because it’s fun!) and walking the dogs (because they’ll love it).

I think I needed this gain. I needed it to be a kick in the pants to get moving. I needed it to motivate me to do more than just stay within my daily points. My tiny gain has led to a real gain – a gain in perspective.

I also can’t ignore the other gain I had this week. During this week’s weight watchers meeting, even after having a small gain on the scale, I shared a non-scale victory with the group. When I went shopping over the weekend with Jason I found out that I had officially gone down another pants size.

Gains of every type (scale or non-scale) are a part of the process. It’s what we do with them that matters.

That’s not bad at all, in terms of gain. It’s possible that it’s even part of normal water-weight fluctuations.

That’s very true. They really were very small gains, but good motivation to get to work on the other things I should be doing (exercise!) and recommit to the things I have been doing well. 🙂

Scales used to be dangerous for me, since I would hang every bit of success on my weight, which fluctuates a lot based on my sodium/water consumption or the antics of the female body. Now that I measure as well as weigh, I’ve got a lot better perspective on how I’m doing.

I’ve been slacking at my workouts lately, too. Maybe we should randomly pester each other on Twitter to keep us motivated! 😛 I did DDR for a while; if you really put everything into it, it’s actually a darn good workout!

Exactly! I remember being disappointed because I realized I was adding additional steps (duh, I was DANCING!) when they weren’t needed for the score. I swing my arms and move my whole body when I do it, not just try to hit the right “buttons”. Can be really fun and you don’t realize how much you’re actually moving!

Also, a lot of my extra weekly points that I used had a lot of sodium… and I was coming down off of one of those female fluctuations you mentioned, so I know I have some water weight.

I’m waiting for the big 5-0 before doing some more measuring, but I’ve definitely been seeing thos numbers go down too!

      The scale certainly isn’t everything!
