We Had Visitors

We’ve been on a little bit of an unexpected hiatus due to some unexpected visitors we has a couple of months back.

Mice.

In my kitchen.

That alone made me want to avoid preparing and cooking healthy food in our kitchen due to the ick factor. Took us about a week or two to get rid of the mice then get everything cleaned up. Once that was done and we were just about ready to get back to normal, I noticed something. Early in that third week, I started to feel edges between the laminate planks near the fridge. I mentioned it to Jason and suggested we try to find the crawl space under our pier and beam house. It was going to be a project for that weekend (along with getting going on re-finishing the floors in our new office).

New office! You can see my missing desk…

By Friday, it was obvious we had a problem. The entire laminate floor was starting to buckle. I was sure that a pipe or something had busted under our floor. Too late in the evening to call a plumber, we head to bed.

At midnight, just as his head hits the pillow, Jason realizes what is going on.

Those damn mice.

Behind the oven.

Where a small water line had been run to connect to the ice maker that we never use in the fridge.

Leaving me blissfully unaware in bed, he hurried to the kitchen and started pulling appliances away from the wall. Even before he saw it, he could hear the water hitting the wall behind the baseboard. Those damn mice, at least three weeks before, had chewed a hole through the freaking water line and it had been soaking our floor the entire time.

I mean really, who wants to cook in this environment?

I won’t go into all of the details of dealing with the Serve Pro guys, or insurance, or our contractor. This has already turned into a three-week delay in getting any work done to get our kitchen back to normal. Initially, we decided to go off plan until I had my kitchen back. Surely we could get someone in to start work right away? Maybe a week and we’d be back to it? Neither of us wanted the stress of trying to stay on plan while literally eating every meal out.

It hasn’t taken long for both of us to be absolutely sick of eating out, whether we make healthy choices or not.  My clothes are getting tighter, Jason’s IBS is flaring up again, and we’re so tired of the choices.

Hoping to soon have an end to this out-of-kitchen experience, we have the contractor come back by to give us another quote. You see, while everything was initially supposed to be limited to the kitchen, right after the water clean up guys removed all of their equipment, our hardwoods started buckling in the hallway on the other side of that wall in the kitchen. We thought it might be an isolated area that would just need a repair.

It’s not.

The buckling continues all the way down the hall, into the living room and we’ve found signs that our bathroom experienced water damage as well. So, instead of a week-long project to just do the lower half of our kitchen, which would have been easier to work into the contractor’s schedule, it’s going to be a full-blown remodel of three rooms and a hallway. Three weeks of work. Which they wouldn’t be able to start until around two months after we get approval from insurance. Instead of costing the $2600 insurance initially thought, we have about $50,000 worth of work that needs to be done in our house.

And I won’t have my kitchen back to normal for at least three months.

Being healthy can’t be put on hold for that much longer, so we’re back on plan as of today. We will be going to weigh-in tonight, but since we’re basically going back to find our new baseline, we won’t be posting results. Those will be for next week. We have plans to try to get our kitchen at least partly back to normal while we wait for the work to get started and we’ll be doing A LOT of grilling.

And yes, we’ll still be eating out. Hopefully not as much, but it will be inevitable, especially during the time that the work is happening.

So this is us, trying to get our house and health back together. It’s going to be one very long summer, and not in a good way.

What a mess! I’m so sorry you guys got slammed with all that stuff! Way to get back in the game, though; you should be proud of recognizing that your new lifestyle really is a lifestyle.

I was just telling UK today how weird it is to be eating out and actually get FULL. I forget sometimes how much we’ve changed.

If you want any suggestions for where to eat or how to find ways to eat at home a little more despite the mess, let me know. I store up ideas and have a great group of very knowledgeable and helpful people on my Tumblr!

Ouch. Sorry this happened to you guys. I know first hand about water damage. It happened in our first home. Fortunately it was all still under warranty with the contractor so they had to fully repair the mess at their expense due to shoddy work.

The bright side is you get every thing just the way you want it.

Man! Sorry to hear about all that damage. Glad to hear you’re getting back on plan. Sctrz and I have talked about going to WW, but haven’t done anything concrete. I will say that getting a stand-up desk for work is one of the best things I have ever done. It seems simple, but I have no problems standing most of the day, and often find it more comfortable than some seats I am expected to use (like folding chairs)
